The Toaster

We’ve continued our journey towards the minimalist lifestyle. Each day we are questioning:

*What can we go without?
*What do we have too many of?
*What do we not need to replace?

My husband recently pulled into question…the toaster. My initial response was “It’s a toaster. Everyone has a toaster…Don’t we need a toaster?” He then began to question how often I use the toaster, what I use it for, etc. Then it was clear…it’s time to ditch the toaster. And honestly it felt so freeing. We had a rather large toaster that took up some good space in our kitchen so it was nice to have more room in that cabinet.

The toaster was gone. We decided if it became a huge inconvenience we were sure somewhere they would sell us a new one.

TOASTER UPDATE:
We went approximately 2 1/2 weeks before even remembering the toaster was gone. I had an “oh crap” moment…how are we gonna make toast? We then googled the best ways to make toast without a toaster. After one round of burnt toast (which our dogs thought was quite tasty) we successfully made toast without a toaster! We’ve been over 3 months toaster-free and we are still surviving!

What is one item you go without that society tells you you need?

Funny enough we too had this debate, goodbye toaster and microwave. In fact when we lived in NC we had no tv, no microwave…Never missed them.

Good for you guys! Yes it’s so crazy how you can easily go without these “everyday” items! Our tiny house will likely not have a microwave either. We will have a TV but we’ve been cable-free for over 2 years!

It’s funny that you and Derek just picked up your trailer, as Ali and I havejust finished watching a documentary on Netflix about “tiny homes.” I was thinking I would have a difficult time giving up our king bed, and high speed, low ping internet.

Crazy! Was it “Tiny: A story about living small”? We’re always trying to watch new things! Moving to the tiny house will mean “giving up” quite a bit, we’re just hoping to gain so much more!
